Music & Me
Hey! My name is Abbey and I am currently a sophomore and a music education major. I have had a love for music my whole whole life and couldn't imagine myself doing anything other than what I am doing right now. I started my music career in the fifth grade by picking up the clarinet; it was a very squawky start. My parents always knew that I would have a profession regarding music even though I didn't, it's like they know me or something :)
I grew up in Inman, South Carolina and moved to Pauline my sophomore year in High School. I am fortunate to not have to live on campus since I live in the area. I really love being able to commute back and forth to school because it allows me to be apart of my little twin brother's lives as much as I can. I love supporting them by traveling and watching their marching band competitions, indoor drum line competitions, and normal band concerts. Bryson plays the trombone and Brandon is in percussion. I have a beagle named Copper and he is quite honestly my partner in crime until it is time for me to practice. He does not appreciate the altissimo range on the clarinet but I don't blame him one bit I don't care for it too much either.
Without music, my life would be quite boring so here is some of the stuff I listen to right now:
1. Here lately, I have been listening to a lot of 90's music for no reason other than it makes me happy. I haven't met anybody that doesn't like 90's music because of how fun and raw the music is. I picked two songs to put under this category because I couldn't decide which one I wanted on here. The first song is called "Breakfast at Tiffany's" by a band called Deep Blue Something. This song is about a man whose girlfriend is on the verge of breaking up with him because the two of them have nothing in common. In reality, a lot of people could probably relate to this song at some point in their life. The second song is called "If it makes you happy" by Sheryl Crow. I am a huge Sheryl Crow fan. This specific song is about a person who seems depressed or upset no matter what happens. According to wikipedia, the inspiration for this song was her own feelings after the massive success of her first album, as her record label put pressure on her to follow it up. I really love this song because its real and full of true emotion.
2. What is an example of music that is important to me? This question is the easiest to answer for me personally because I always go back to the same song whenever I have a really bad day or when unfortunate things happen in my life. The song I have chosen is "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac. I hold this song near and dear to my heart because it is about the challenges and changes of life and how you are not the only one feeling these feelings. Not to be dramatic but this song has gotten me through some rough times. It is a great song to listen to if you ever just need a good solid cry.
3. An example of music I don't really connect with. This question is not difficult to answer but I have made it difficult on myself. I don't really connect with the new country songs that are coming out here lately. To me they seem to be redundant and repetitive with their song topics. However, there is nothing wrong with that at all, a song can be repetitive and be popular and successful but in my opinion it is annoying. I have family members that love this kind of country music but I just don't get it the way they do and that is okay because I'm sure they don't connect with some of my music either.

Hey Abbey, it is nice to hear the music u have shared! I especially found some connection to the song "If it makes you happy" . I agree with you that in 90s there are a lot of intereseting elements in music came out although I havent born in that time, I can really find the music then were very motivating and creating!
ReplyDeleteAnd also, yes, I dont like mordern country music because if kindda lost some original thing compare to the real, original country music, everything seems fits into everthing!
90s music is my absolute favorite era to listen to! It screams dad music and I feel that I am a childless dad. Sherryl Crow is incredibly talented and I love the song you put on here, one of the bands Im in actually covers that song. You should listen to Brandie Carlile, her song "The Story" will hit you in the feels.
ReplyDeleteAlso Fleetwood Mac is crazy crazy crazy good and regardless of the popularity of "Landslide" I listen to that song all the time!
Hey Abbey! First off, your Beagle is precious...I'm a huge dog person. :) I've been diving into 90's music recently as well! I love the connections you have to the Sheryl Crow song because its so important to really connect to a song and its story. I'm not a fan of country music either so I'm right there with you on that!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you play clarinet, now I know! I really appreciate how important family is to you. I love Fleetwood mac. Yeah I'm not a fan of contemporary country music. Lovely dog!
ReplyDeleteHi Abbey! I like your different interests in music and it gave me a sense as to what 90s music sounds like. Being more of an 80s person, I do like how there's emotion and how people back then could easily relate to it. I also agree with your thoughts on country music nowadays. It's not necessarily my taste nor do I understand their messages.
