Music & Family
Music & Family
For this blog, I have decided to do something a little different from what the prompt stated. Instead of interviewing one family member I interviewed two: my mom and my dad. The reason I have come to this decision is because I couldn't choose between them. They both are the reason I have a love for music so they both have to be included. However, I didn't record our conversation because my parents are like me when it comes to nerves so I knew that I would get better responses without recording them. I also enjoyed comparing their answers, it was very interesting. The fact that I get to interview two non music people is what makes this specific project unique. So, let's jump into it!
My parents:
Before I jump into the questions, I think it would be cool to explain and show you all who my parents are. My parents met their sophomore year at Chapman High school but were quite polar opposites at the time. My mom was on the softball team and my dad was in track and dabbled a little in band (he was a trumpet player). It is kind of ironic that two sports oriented people had three kids who are involved in music and want nothing to do with sports. However they are both very supportive of all of us and come to all of our concerts and events. They even took me to my first band competition, little did they know that that would become their life as well as mine lol.

Question no. ONE: What are the earliest artists you remember listening to?
Mom: I grew up listening to a lot of Elvis Presley, Beach Boys, and the Beatles.
Dad: The first artist I remember listening to is Sawyer Brown.
Question no. TWO: What kinds of songs resonated with you when you were younger, or DIDN'T resonate with you when you were younger? Child, tween, teen, young adult, etc.
Mom: I resonated well with Boys II men and I didn't resonate well with the really old country my step dad used to make us listen to every time we got in the car.
Dad: I also resonated well with Boys II men, but I didn't resonate well with Tanya Tucker.
Question no. THREE: Did the style of music you listened to influence other areas of your life, like how you dressed or who you hung out with?
Mom: Not really, my music tastes didn't really determine who I hung out with or how I dressed.
Dad: Yes, my music taste affected the way that I dressed, I wore a lot of 90s grunge attire and had frosted tips in high school. Frosted tips should never be brought back lol.
Question no, FOUR: How did your parents fee about your music taste?
Mom: They only liked it when I listened to their kind of music, they didn't like it when I listened to my own music. I hid A LOT of albums from my parents because they did not approve of artists like Eminem and The Beastie Boys.
Dad: My mother liked my music taste but my father did not because he is somewhat small-minded and stuck in his time. It is okay though.
Question no. FIVE: How did you listen to your music?
Mom AND Dad: We both listened to our music on Vinyls, Walkmans or tape decks, and the radio.
I think it would be so cool to own a working walkman.
Question no. SIX: What kind of concerts did you go to?
Both of my parents attended the same concerts, they went to see A LOT of different artists while they were dating in high school. They went to go see Kenny Chesney, Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, Blake Shelton, Cravin' Melon, Kentucky Head Hunters, and Sawyer Brown. They traveled and saw predominately country artists in their time because that was something they both enjoyed.
Question no. SEVEN: What is your favorite music score from a movie?
Mom: Jurassic Park and Armageddon
Dad: Braveheart and E.T
I absolutely LOVE the scores they picked, especially the score from E.T. . John Williams is a brilliant artist. Fun Fact: I have a stuffed E.T. hanging from my rearview mirror in my Bug and we fly.
Question no. EIGHT: Is there a specific song that brings back a specific memory?
Mom: Yes, the song "Wonderful Tonight". It was played for the final dance at my senior prom with your dad.
Dad: Yes, the song "I could not ask for more". It was the first time I ever danced with your mom.
I thought that this was very sweet, I hope that one day I will find that somebody to share songs and memories with. Not to get all mushy or anything but sometimes I'll look up from whatever I'm doing and they'll be dancing in the kitchen while making dinner. Music doesn't even have to be playing sometimes.
Question no. NINE: What do you think about the music kids listen to today?
Unison: GARBAGE!!!
Ah yes, every parent's answer, but who could blame them? I agree with them %100 because the majority of music today is not what it used to be at all.
Question no. TEN: If you could make the world listen to one song, what would it be?
They both answered this question with the same song which was really wicked if you ask me. They both answered with "I believe love is the answer" by a band called Blessed Union of Souls. This is a very heart felt song that discusses very controversial topics. After listening to this song I feel like this band was way ahead of their time.
